About Doom

I doubt whether there is an interesting little bit about computers, who has not heard of the game Doom. Cult game, which went through many conversions, and has been ported to the platform unless all possible. Any developer or a group, creating a new game or program assumes that it will be better than anything so far appeared. Only time and the recipient verify that it is. Doom – first 3D FPS

The Amiga 500 computer classes such games can not offer too much from the appearance and speed. We had to give up something, and the desire to have everything associated with a configuration having a much faster (and hence – more expensive) than the popular equipment for the masses. Although there were attempts to reconcile both, but an excellent example that something like that in nature there is no law there is another Polish production – “The Citadel” (slow and relatively poor graphics at the expense of action on the A500, but still playable) or “Alien Breed 3D” (incredible speed graphics, atmosphere and gameplay – unfortunately at the expense of the appearance and behavior on the bare A1200).

The authors went further, however, the titles of brains and just started cutting off rigidly from the older, slower and less technologically advanced models. The titles that deserve to be called real, Amiga s FPS for them to fully enjoy, AGA chipset no longer needed and much faster processors. Still, the fate circled bottleneck that leaves a mark their mark on the speed and detail graphics (up to 1997 none was originally created for the Amiga FPS did not use the graphics card!). The happy medium is hard to find, but it was not impossible. The best ones included in this plot, “Breathless” and “Alien Breed 3D II – The Killing Grounds.” These titles offer a whole lot of new opportunities that somehow pierce the “Doom”, but at the time of launch it was already too late to wipe the name of the paragraphs of players around the world. But the Amiga got its “Doom”. There was no conversion or a new idea. A straight port built on December 26, 1997 released annually by ID Software game engine source code (an interesting – the first port of Amiga version appeared in less than a day after the release of sources!). This somewhat lengthy introduction is the result of my thoughts when I attempted to review “Doom”. However, the birth of the game, visually and sonically, “Doom” look at one of the best production.

“Doom” and “Doom 2″ does not recommend no one falls. Besides, there is probably someone who does not have heard about this title, and maybe not even playing, so basically it does not even have what is silica in some recommendations. John Carmack and his colleagues have created an amazing thing that remains engraved in the annals of computer games. Perhaps no other game has gained such notoriety, has not enjoyed such popularity. Ports ‘Doom’

On the Amiga classic, there are several ports “Doom”. First and the most popular is ADoom by Peter McGavin. Port is available in versions for different processors, as well as the only version of the classic PPC (WarpOS). It is based on the original ID Software source codes. It offers the opportunity to play in full screen mode and in the window. Up to a point as the only allowed a rolling game with original music in the background. Later ADoom has been ported to AmigaOS 4.x systems, AROS and MorphOS. Supports ECS chipset, AGA and graphics cards.

Attack is a port by Georg Steger, whose need for original sources have been somewhat rebuilt. It is available in one version, but relies on plug-ins and external C2P conversion procedures adapted to several types of processors and graphics chips (Akiko, Graffiti card). Unfortunately PPC processors are supported. Port is very fast (it is said that the build for the same processor raises ADoom port) and 68 040 plays in most cases is the most fun to play without any significant problems. Plugins allow you to also play on the network and play music in the background, which makes the player to any fixed set of modules in the format protracker.

PrBoom the engine based on SDL library (for the Amiga classic is not likely to give, and probably does not even exist for the compilation of these processors). Of course there are also other versions of Doom ports. Probably many of you are asking which port to choose which is best? There is no single answer. You have to test every variety and trying different combinations depend on us to choose the hardware configuration, which in our subjective feeling best meets our expectations. Personally, I have Amiga 68040/PPC and, despite what you might think, I play using DoomAttack. The game is delicious.

Ports for activities which require the original files of the game (still to be bought). WAD files are supported shareware version, full, “The Ultimate Doom” and “Doom 2: Hell on Earth”. Additionally, you can easily use the additional maps and files PWAD (however, first read its documentation to learn how to run them).

WAD and PWAD

All the games (the distribution of levels, graphics, sound) are compiled in a WAD file. The game without at least one WAD file will not start. However WAD files rozkompilowywać modifying the data contained in them and create your own. (The so-called PWAD – Patch WAD). You can call it a supplement to the original game. This creates a new set of steps, which in addition to new maps also often offer new graphics, new monsters, new weapons. The additives, in which I play, I recommend “Evilution”, “The Plutonia Experiment” and “Icarus” (the first two were included in the compilation “The Final Doom”, which additionally consisted of “The Ultimate Doom” and “Doom 2 “). Persons interested in making their own compilations WAD should look at Aminet and find DeuTex package. It is a tool to compile your own maps and their components in WAD files. The program will be applied among fans of Doom, Heretic and Hexen.

Requirements

Each of the 3D games that we have available for the Amiga, requires something more than the basic configuration. It is no different from the “doom”. While some ports operate on a bare A1200 (ai even on the A600 to 68020), playing too much time has no meaning. It will either slowly or in a small window. Waste of time and eyes. It makes sense seems to have at least 68030, but can not avoid some kind of slowdown. However, the decision whether to such a configuration would be impossible to play is individual and everyone has to answer the question whether it suits him. But remember that the CPU is not everything. Each port “Doom” requires about 8 MB of memory and little free hard disk space
